TRABZON'S BIRDS

Trabzon is located on bird migration routes. It starts at the end of February and begins with spring, continues till the April. The winter migrations begin with the cooling of the air from the end of August to the end of November. Trabzon is rich in terms of birdwatching and photography. There are about twenty-five bird watchers and photographers. Except for migratory birds, there are many in our local birds.

Approximately 483 bird species have been observed in Turkey and 444 of them have been documented. Approximately 294 bird species have been observed and photographed in Trabzon. Mountain rooster, the most important species of the Caucasus mountain range, lives in the high sections of Trabzon-Rize-Artvin. It was observed and photographed in the high sections of Çaykara in Trabzon. Another rare species, the yellow-billed flax, lives in the higher parts of Araklı. When migrations begin, other rare species are also can be observed. Some species can be seen even if some of them are hard to see such as Big Water Pitch, Terek Whistle, Red Neck Tortoise, Siberian Excavation, Drifters, Yellow Tarantula, Big tars, Uludogan, Sarıkaşlı.

Migratory birds are generally observed in the coastal zone. Behind Söğütlü TRT, Akçakale harbor, Besirli coastal side, Faroz port, 100th year park and sea coast, between the coastline from Araklı to the coastline and Of – İyidere.

Predators usually can be seen in high places. They can be photographed and observed in the high sections of Dağbaşı – Salmankaş pass, Tonya and higher sections of Araklı and Çaykara.

 TRABZON'S BUTTERFLIES

Trabzon has a rich ecological structure in terms of its geographical location. The main reasons of this richness are being neighbor with Gümüşhane, have a location in the seaside of the Black Sea and being under the influence of the continental climate. The average rainfall, forests and high rivers provides a habitat for many living creatures. 

Trabzon and its surroundings are very rich in terms of forests, green spaces, plant species and wildlife. Climate is suitable for growing almost any kind of tree and plant species and for sheltering wild animals. In the forests reaching up to 2000m from the seaside, trees can be seen such as Spruce, Fir, Beech, Yellow Crane, Kizilagac and Chestnut. 

Trabzon has about 25% of our country's rich butterfly variety. It is an important point for domestic and foreign butterfly observers. This, of course, is also important for economic benefits such as alternative tourism and nature tourism. The fact that the possibilities of transportation and accommodation makes Trabzon more important. 

Many foreign observers use Trabzon - Rize (Sivrikaya) - Ovit, Erzurum (İspir), Trabzon - Kelkit routes for Onion plant, Reptile, Butterfly and natural flora observation.  

Observations can be made for many habitats in Maçka Altındere, Akçaabat Hıdırnebi-Seragölü west coast, Of-Çaykara Uzungöl-Haldızen Plateau and Trabzon’s city center seaside, medium-high height valleys and creek beds.
